Insecta Dormientes (Elandra)
Eight inches from head to thorax, females of this species hold their young in a specially developed pouch organ. This pouch organ contains a base, and a chemical known as benzodiazepine. The creature can use this to its advantage in two ways. It can defensively inject the base/benzodiazepine combo into its attacker using mandibular needles to cause it to fall asleep harmlessly. Since it is primarily a herbivore (Being omnivorous during mating season to quickly build up essential nutrients, it will scavenge voraciously for anything that may provide nutrient.) it rarely needs to use it offensively. The second way this cocktail of base and drug aids this bug is during reproduction. Females count on being eaten, because its young cannot leave the pouch without it being breached. In order to save its young when the mother is eaten, the pouch contains a base to neutralized stomach acid and the benzodiazepine puts the predator to sleep. This allows the young to walk out of the predator unchallenged, and the life cycle begins again. A predator eating a female Insecta Dormientes will find itself easy prey for other predators. Male Insecta Dormientes must use their mandibles to deliver its payload, as it doesn't have as large a sack as the females.
Insecta Dormientes contains Benzodiazepine, which will cause restful sleep... VERY restful sleep... rather useful for people who can't sleep, or surgery.
